Chapter 12 is the 12th chapter of Kodocha, as well as the second chapter of the third book.
Summary[]
Sana's class goes on a field trip, but she's worried about her mom's book that will publish at the end of summer vacation. Akito notices that Sana is worried despite her hiding it.
Plot[]
At home, Sana Kurata is getting ready for the school field trip her class is going on the next day, but gets interrupted by her mom, who explains that it's time for them to fulfill their promise (and that the two requirements have been fulfilled: Misako's novelist career going well, and Sana being more well known than the average girl). Sana is clearly uncomfortable hearing all this, but puts on a smiling face to her mom, who explains that the book (which is apparently the promise) will be finished by the time she's back from her field trip, and published at the end of her summer vacation.
The next day at school, the kids board the bus for their field trip. Sana is acting like her usual high energy upbeat self externally, but is worried about the book. Akito Hayama notices something is up, and lets her know his dad is home from the hospital, and that he told him to tell Sana thanks for visiting. Sana gets distracted by their classmates, and Akito looks on.
They arrive at their field trip, and Sana feels more of the same, externally acting upbeat, internally worried about the book. All the girls fall asleep, leaving Sana awake. She heads to the bathroom, meanwhile Tsuyoshi and Akito are also the only ones up in the boys room. The two see Sana, and Akito goes to check up on her, asking if she's okay, and that he's noticed she's seemed distracted and unlike herself. Sana is shocked that he noticed, but brushes it off. He's about to continue onto something when they get distracted by a sound, that they follow to find out it's a karaoke party the teachers are having. The principal encourages the teachers to let the two stay, and they eat.
The next day, they continue field trip activities (mountain climbing, and a bonfire). At the latter, Sana is dwelling on her worries when she starts following a firefly. At the same time, Akito sees her wandering away from the group after the firefly, and then suddenly disappear. Worried, he goes after her, finding a cliff. He scales down, finding Sana at the bottom, unharmed. Sana tries to climb back up, but is unable to. Sana freaks out being alone with Akito (seeing as he kissed her and pat her chest in the past) but he insists that he won't touch her again if she doesn't want him to, and she confirms she doesn't, so he says he won't. With that said, he continues to say what he was about to before being interrupted the night before, which is that he thinks that Sana being a good actor makes him worried that sometimes her cheerful attitude is just an act. Sana is struck by this.

All About Chipmunks: "I have a chipmunk, just like Mariko. I don't keep him in my hair though! (hee hee) In the comic, Maro sits calmly on Mariko's head (most of the time) - but in real life, chipmunks are never calm! He's always moving around. If I drew it realistically, it would look like this.
It's too much! That's why I don't portray Maro like a real chipmunk. To be continued."
