Chapter 21 is the 21st chapter of Kodocha, the first chapter of the fifth book in the Tankōbon Release, and the second chapter of the third book in the Kanzenban and Bunkoban releases.
Summary[]
It turns out that Akito, Tsuyoshi, and Fuka all went to kindergarten together, and Akito kissed Fuka on a bet. Fuka is angry at Akito over the kiss. On a school trip, Akito shows Sana a beautiful nature view, and Tsuyoshi tells Sana that Akito likes her.
Plot[]
Tensions are high in the cafeteria continuing exactly where the previous chapter left off. Fuka explains how she's mad at Akito because he kissed her kindergarten out of nowhere. She'd forgotten about it until some classmates were discussing who they'd like to be her first kiss, and she had to admit she'd already had hers (but wasn't able to clarify the circumstances of which) this lead to Fuka's crush Yuta Takaishi to shun her. Sana feels for Fuka, meanwhile Akito thinks she's making a big deal out of nothing.
Tsuyoshi brings Akito aside to warn him that he shouldn't tell his side of the story, which segues into a flashback from Akito's point of view. His classmates were making a big show of being embarrassed about the idea of kissing after one kid mentioned seeing his parents kissing. Akito acts cool and says kissing isn't a big deal, and they bet 60 yen that Akito wouldn't kiss Fuka, but he does, and uses the money to buy dinosaur erasers. Back in current day, Akito decides to keep the details to himself.
Sana teases Akito for kissing anyone, but Akito insists it's not the same, but Sana continues teasing causing the two to bicker. The two go to their respective classes, where Akito's homeroom teacher, Mr. Sengoku yells at him and lets him know in front of the whole class that he's aware of the trouble Akito caused in his sixth grade class. Akito rebukes him, and Tsuyoshi tries to smooth things over, and when it doesn't work goes on a rampage. Back in Sana's class, she and a classmate from her sixth grade class can hear a commotion correctly guess the cause.
Sana feels tension between she and Akito, but starts getting busy due to the upcoming movie shoot (which Asako has also been cast in). Sana decides to join the gymnastics club alongside Fuka, and asks Fuka if she's tried clarifying the situation with Takaishi, where Fuka admits she already tried reaching out and he already has a new girlfriend.
On a school trip, Sana is surprised to find out some girls like Akito., but balance is quickly restored when he scares them off. Fuka starts to tell him off (wanting to lecture him on being nicer) but he explains his rationale, and Fuka concedes, finding a new respect for him.
Fuka and Sana stick together, but Tsuyoshi and Akito break away from them, a minute later Akito whisks Sana away wordlessly to show her a beautiful view. She's confused but flattered he'd want to show her this, and questions why she feels weird around Akito. He asks about her upcoming movie, and seems jealous of Naozumi before leaving Sana to talk to Tsuyoshi and Aya.
Sana is still deep in thought when Tsuyoshi comes to talk to her, he tells her about how they gave the chick (who had grown into a rooster) that Sana had given to Aono away to a place that keeps chickens near their old house. When Akito comes up, it becomes obvious to the both of them that the way Tsuyoshi views Akito's feelings on Sana, and the way Sana views Akito's feelings towards her are very different. Tsuyoshi tells her that Akito really likes her, and Sana immediately jumps to scrutinizing.

Author's Notes[]
"Hello, it's me, Obana. Can you believe it's book 5 already? How time flies. Sana & all her friends are in junior high now. Amazing. (Like I had nothing to do with it!) I wasn't sure if I was going to move them on to junior high yet. I thought about keeping them in sixth grade. (That's what Rei would like!)"
"But I decided it was time for seventh grade! And now, I'm going to focus on romance for a while. Like a girl's comic should! Keep on reading!"
The Dream Team: "Before, when Sana and her friends were still in elementary school, I drew everything by myself. But now it's too much for me to handle! Junior high is so complicated! So now I have assistants who draw the school backgrounds for me. It really helps because they're better than me at it! And my sister still helps she used to just put down plain graytones, but now she can do the fancy shading stuff, too!"
"I used to fight alone, but now the people at work are standing by my side. Thanks, guys! Let's gо for it!"
