Chapter 43 is the 43rd chapter of Kodocha, the third chapter of the ninth book in the Tankōbon Release, and the seventh chapter of the sixth book in the Kanzenban and Bunkoban releases.
Summary[]
Sana and Akito give Fuka a late birthday present - the phone number of the boy she had a crush on before she moved to Tokyo.
Plot[]
Sana has dinner with Rei and her mom, where her mom says that she's working on My Daughter and I part two with Sana's collaboration to Rei's surprise. Though he feels better when she reassures him that it's not going to have any secrets or anything. They both can tell how much Akito means to Sana, and Sana is in a happy daze over him.
Days later, Sana and Akito meet up for their school's closing ceremony. Sana brings up how they still haven't given Fuka a present, and start to think of present ideas. Sana remembers her crush on Takaishi, and Akito fills Sana in for the first time about how some of Fuka's friends from Osaka visited while Sana was filming Mizu no Yakata.
At school sometime later, Sana flips through Fuka's address book and finds that Takaishi's number and information is crossed out. Fuka finds her spying, and when asked why she crossed him out explains that she called the number and it was disconnected so presumably he moved. Akito and Sana have a conversation about this, where Akito finds a business card that one of Fuka's friends from Osaka gave him. He calls her, and gets Takaishi's new information. Akito initially starts the call with Takaishi, but Sana hops in when the two of them are overly shy. Takashi, tells Sana that he and his girlfriend broke up.
Sana excitedly tells Fuka this at school. Where she gives Fuka Takaishi's new number as a birthday present. Fuka is initially upset, and the two bicker, but she still leaves with the number in hand after Akito insists she take it. At home, Fuka feels relief just knowing that she can call him if she decides to.
Misako talks to her editor about My Daughter, and I part two, specifically asking about if she would like to put the chapter that she cut from the original My Daughter and I in this followup. Misako esoterically says that she still thinks that it should be kept out, since Sana "doesn't remember it at all and maybe it's better that she doesn't".
Akito goes to physical therapy, Sana meets him there. Sana tells him that she's about to start working again, and it reminds Akito of Naozumi. He tells Sana about how he came to visit him recently at the physical therapy place, and how he told Akito not to make Sana cry anymore. Sana picks up that he's jealous, and teases him for it, but also assures him. They get food, but cut things off early given that Akito's dad is arriving home from his business trip today.
At the Hayama household, Fuyuki drops the news that he's being transferred to his company's main office in Los Angeles and has to move there. Natsumi an Akito assume that this will be the same as when they were younger, where he moves, and they stay in the country. But he drops the bomb that they are all three going to be moving there together. As they have this conversation, Sana is none the wiser drying her hair happily.

Author's Notes[]
CONTINUED...: "I believe in facing up to your weaknesses, and I think I still have a lot to work on. But these days I feel really happy (although I admit I still worry about my art a lot too). For now, I want to keep working hard and write and draw more comics! I believe that I have some talent...but I really do think Kodocha has brought me luck! Since I created Kodocha, I've had all of my dreams, big or small, come true! Like, I wanted to not be poor anymore... I wanted to see my artwork on the cover of Ribon magazine... I wanted to someday have the front section of Ribon...I wanted to just once in my life get to make furoku [the free gifts like stationery or stickers that are included in comic anthologies in Japan] (and I was only wishing for these things. to happen once, and I got some of them lots of times!) And I even had my art and characters turned into an animated TV show...so dream of having my my own TV series someday came true, too... To be continued..."
CONTINUED... "And back before I ever had my work published, I used to secretly dream about someday winning the Kodansha Manga Award. But I thought it was so presumptuous of me! It was just this one little ambitious thought I had... (like a big stubbly hair growing out of a little flea's heart...) But...I got to watch my mentor, Momoko Sakura, win the 13th Annual Kodansha Award, back when I was her assistant. And I thought it would be so cool to win one myself someday... But never in my wildest dreams did I think I would really win one... especially so early in my career! So I was totally surprised to win it..."
