Summary[]
Sana learns that Asako is Rei's ex-girlfriend, and is self conscious about her place in Rei's life because of this. Meanwhile on a field trip, Akito surprises Sana with a kiss.
Plot[]
Rei's glasses hit the pavement just as Sana catches up with he and Asako. Sana is furious, Asako makes it clear she just wants to talk with Rei, meanwhile he isn't interested, but confirms they used to date "a long time ago". Asako's manager catches up with the group just as passerby's start to recognize the two stars, and ushers Asako to their car all the while she pleads that Rei call her.
Back at the Kurata residence, Sana feels self conscious about her place in Rei's life, but Rei assures that she shouldn't worry because she's "number one in his life right now" and that makes her feel better.... up until she knocks over a box in Rei's room and turns out to be full of recent photos of Asako.
At school the next day, Tsuyoshi asks Sana about Rei, Sana dramatically explains her woes, and Akito undermines her feelings by saying he thinks Rei is talking down to Sana. This adds more fuel to Sana's self conscious fire. At the end of the school day, Rei is waiting for Sana to get out of school as always, but Tsuyoshi and Akito approach instead, telling him that Sana left with her friends. Akito demands they talk with him, and the three head to a cafe. There, Akito confronts Rei about talking down to her, but Rei stands firm that he owes Sana a lot (going so far to say she saved his life), and he wants to honor her feelings. Akito doesn't buy this, and makes he and Tsuyoshi leave, all the while insulting him. Rei is shocked by Akito's brashness.
At home, Sana feels glum about the whole thing, and consults her diaries from the time she met Rei to clarify her feelings. Through this we see Sana at age 9, seeing Rei on the streets and feeling sorry for him, giving him food, and eventually bringing him home (as if he were a stray dog) but after he and her mom had a conversation, it was decided he could stick around. Eventually this turned into him taking the role of Sana's manager. As Sana closes her diary, she connects the dots that Asako must have been the girl who dumped Rei, which created a domino effect of bad luck. Rei gets home, and Sana acts cold towards him. She has a field trip tomorrow, but wants to get a ride with friends. Rei seems saddened by her attitude, and alone in his room, he picks up the phone to call Asako, but doesn't have her number.
The next day at school, Akito is surprised that Sana didn't learn of him confronting Rei. Sana has her usual silly antics with her classmates, meanwhile Akito struggles due to his fear of heights conflicting with the field trip's location being a very tall building. After seeing a classmate who had motion sickness from the elevator feel better after drinking juice, Sana goes to get Akito some, but ends up accidentally spilling it on him. As she wipes it off him, Akito kisses Sana on the lips, which she is immediately furious about (made worse by the fact all their classmates saw it). Akito taunts Sana, saying she probably makes out with Rei all the time, but Sana furiously rejects this, which prompts Akito to use it as proof Rei is talking down to her. At home, Sana tells her mom about the kiss, upset.

Author's Notes[]
Playin' My Song "They let me write the theme song for the video! I thought maybe a pro should do it, but I did it anyway. Ha, ha. It's very amateurish, and embarrassing.)Oh, well. I'm an amateur.) This is the only time you'll hear a song I wrote, so check it out! I have to admit, I didn't really think about it actually being sung when I wrote it. So, it might not be so easy to sing. (The singer, Miss Chisa Yokoyama, is also the voice of Sana in the video.) I actually wrote three different songs at first. 1: Serious; 2: Funny; and 3: Just plain goofy. (Hee-hee.) And they ended up picking the serious one to record. I dunno, maybe it's too serious for Kodocha. Please sing it in your music class in school! (Hee-hee.) I told them I couldn't write songs! But I wrote the music and then I thought it would be embarrassing to ask a professional to add words to an amateur's melody. So I gave it a try! I hope you like it! (To be continued.)"
The Write Stuff "Mr. Hongo from Shueisha (the production company) helped me write the theme. (He also did the arrangement.) Thank you Mr. Hongo! I'm used to showing editors my work for feedback and changing things after their input (from doing my comics), so our session went smoothly. The lyrics are written from Sana's point of view, and the song is called "Child's Feeling." Check it out!I really like playing musical instruments, so I enjoyed writing the music for the song, too. I can play almost everything at least a little bit, but I play the piano and saxophone a lot. (And drums and guitar, too.) I played the saxophone for three years in junior high band! I still perform in public sometimes. I go and play my saxophone in a neighborhood park. But I can't play it like I used to! I used to take such huge breaths, people thought I could just keep playing without ever stopping to breathe. But I can't play that way any more since I started smoking!"
All about the Himawari Theater "In book 1, I told you about my friend "S", who Sana is partly based on. Let me tell you some more about her! "S" was in Himawari Theater (which I based Sana's Himawari Theater on), and was on TV a lot. She did lots of stuff. She was on regular shows and did commercials. I've even seen her face on a toy box! At one point (in elementary school), I wanted to be just like her. So can you guess what I did? I auditioned for the Himawari Theater! I really did! Can you believe it? (To be continued.)"
Trivia[]
- This chapter was adapted into the episode A Fruit Juice Soaked First Kiss.
- There's the first hint that Aya Sugita has a crush on Tsuyoshi, as on the field trip the classmates are teasing her over having a crush on somebody (but she won't tell them who).
