Chapter 9 is the 9th chapter of Kodocha, as well as the fourth chapter of the second book.
Summary[]
Sana feels more at peace about everything between she and Rei after a surprisingly pleasant conversation with Akito. Sana gives her blessing, and Rei and Asako get together. Akito's dad is rushed to hospital.
Plot[]
Sana and Akito sit on a bench to chat. Sana explains what happens, and explains the parallel she's seen of her situation, and Aono and the chick. Akito assumes Sana's mad she met Rei at all, but Sana feverishly disagrees, still saying she's happy to have had the experience of knowing him. The two realize how they're always opposite, and even with that can't agree whether it's annoying (Sana's perspective) or funny (Akito's). Akito encourages Sana to go home, but Sana is too embarrassed. He then confides in her, saying that everyone likes her, so she shouldn't feel bad. He also admits he's embarrassed about how he used to act, and yet, despite Sana seeing him during that period he's now embarrassed by, she still chooses to be around him. He uses that as an example to say that Rei must feel the same way. Sans understands this, and just then, the stray dogs that wander around Sana's house run to her with a flag attached that reads "wandering along at night is dangerous. Come home. - Mother & Rei". Sana resolves to go home, and thanks Akito, and before leaving - asks why he kissed her. He says "because I don't hate you". Which confuses Sana deeply, but she ponders that it was sweet of him to listen to her troubles and help her out.
At home, Sana talks to Rei, and tells him he should get back together with Asako. Sana cries, but is reassured by him telling her he's still her manager. Sana tells her mom of the resolution, and her mom, working on a novel, thinks on a promise she and Sana have.
The next day, Sana learns her schedule is going to get busier, thanks to Rei wanting to make up for all the drama by being the best manager he can be. She's set to appear on seven commercials, and this gets in the way of her social life in school. After one of the commercial shoots, Sana urges Rei to see Asako (who hasn't seen her yet). Asako is surprised to see them, but Sana asserts that she's grown up now (in reference to Rei's previous encounter with Asako) and pleads for her not to abandon Rei. After this, Sana makes a speedy exit, leaving Rei and Asako to start making out.
On her walk home, Sana runs into Akito's dad, who she doesn't initially recognize due to him losing a lot of weight (he brushes it off as working hard). He's taking home sushi, which he says is Akito's favorite! In spending more time with Akito recently, he realized that when Akito says "I don't hate it" it means he loves it. This shocks Sana due to what Akito had said to her earlier.
Now at home, Sana gets a call from Akito. They had started to eat the sushi, but his dad has a coughing fit and passed out. Sana is shocked since she just saw him, and rides her bike to the hospital. Natsumi Hayama is crying, while Akito keeps to his usual stoic attitude... up until Sana arrives where he worriedly asks what he would do if he dies. Sana hugs Akito, as she remembers his dad excitedly talking about how he's getting to know Akito.

Author's Notes[]
The Subject is Sushi "When it comes to food, I'm not a gourmet at all. Every time I eat in a really expensive restaurant, I get a horrible stomach ache! (hee-hee) I'm the kind of woman who would rather have Roman noodles and play pool then enjoy a fancy meal. However, there's one food I'm really into – sushi. When I was little, I only ate cheap (and crappy) sushi, so I didn't like it very much. (how embarrassing to admit it) but when I got my first royalty check, I could finally afford Toku-jo sushi, and it was really good!
Ever since that day, I can only eat Toku-jo sushi. I treat myself to it just once a month – when I'm working really hard on my deadlines. (Just a little oasis. In the desert of hard work, you know.) Thanks for making such a great sushi, Dharma Sushi!"
My Alarming Clock "I can never get up in the morning. I always hit the snooze button and go back to sleep. When I was in high school, I was tardy more than anyone else in my class! I thought I'd better do something about it, so I bought an alarm clock that was like a mole hitter game. It worked! It was so hard to hit the moles, I got up in time for days. But after about a month, I got so good at hitting the moles when the alarm went off...
...I could hit them all real fast, and...
...Go right back to sleep! (To be continued.)"
Part Two "So, I looked for a better alarm clock. In this one catalog, I found a pillow that vibrates your head to wake you up. I thought it sounded like it would work – but then I figured having my head shook around every morning would just make me more stupid, so I didn't get it. On Christmas, my sister gave me the "Little Bear's Music Group". It's a clock with five cute little toy bears who played music in the morning. This one worked pretty well – because the Bears worked so hard to play their music, I felt sorry for them, and woke up, feeling refreshed. But, then I got used to that, too. (Now it sounds to me like a lullaby.) But finally, I found the ultimate. alarm clock – it's my cat, Nao! Every day I have to get up to stop Nao from messing with my desk. Finally, I can wake up in the morning!"
