Destroy the Hayama Monster! and Misako & Maro are the first "extra" chapters of Kodocha (a type of chapter that is disconnected from the story at large, and sillier in tone). In the Tankōbon Release, it's inserted after Chapter 5 in the first book. While in the Kanzenban and Bunkoban releases, it's inserted after Chapter 7 in the first book.
Summary[]
Sana has a dream where Akito is a harmful species of moth, and we get some insight on how Sana's mom came into keeping her pet chipmunk Maro.
Plot[]
Destroy the Hayama Monster![]
Sana Kurata arrives at school already angry at Akito over a nightmare she had. Tsuyoshi wants to hear about the dream, so she shares.
It was on another planet... a small and peaceful "Kurata Kingdom" where "Princess Sana" gets told by Rei that the queen is missing, and that she could have been attacked by the "Hayama Monster" (a moth with the head of Akito). Sana and Rei prepare a rescue mission, but the Queen reappears, having been turned into a moth by the Hayama Monster. Sana is furious, and suits up (as in: gets a gun and a spaceship) and Tsuyoshi comes along to help. Sana shoots at a swarm of Hayama Monsters, and they find a "boss Hayama" (a moth with Akito's face that's inexplicably in a box sort of barrier). Sana and Tsuyoshi approach the encased boss, and he pleads with them to let him go, sharing a sad story. Sana shoots the box open, freeing the Hayama Monster boss, and he immediately laughs, revealing the story was a lie and he had tricked her. He turns Tsuyoshi and Sana into moths, and flies away. Sana realizes she can also fly, and she has fun with this for a minute, but then remembers she needs to kill the Hayama monster, she tries shooting him, but it turns out he's immune. Back at the palace, the Queen has turned back into a human after a bath. Back in real life, Sana finishes sharing her dream as class is about to start.
Mariko & Maro[]
Sana, at this point a four year old, sees a street vendor selling Chipmunks. She wants one, but her mother refuses... until one jumps in her hair, and will not come out, prompted her to adopt it. They name it Maro. Later they try to keep him in a cage, but he continues to want to live in Misako's hair. She accepts this, and seven years later, Sana asks why Maro lives in her hair, having forgotten the prior events. More humorously, Sana remarks how when she feeds Maro, she sometimes thinks she sees more than one chipmunk in her mom's hair, but her mom brushes her off saying that it's all in her head. Finally, Misako has a nose bandage because Maro fell into her ramen, and jumped and bit her nose to save himself.

Author's Notes[]
"This extra... Is a parody of an awful nightmare I had when I was in junior high. It was about a bunch of moths attacking our school with some weird poisonous powder. I left my best friend, Y, behind, and ran! It was a bad dream – but still! How could I?!
The Hayama Monster is the product of Sana's imagination, and I think it's a little happier than the real Hayama, don't you? For one thing, it laughs! Check it out! Anyway, this is the last of my incoherent babbling for this volume. Thank you ❤ It was pretty incoherent, wasn't it? But I actually talk like this. You must be a nice person to have read this part!! ❤ thank you so much! And I hope you'll check out book 2." -Signed, Miho Obana, 1995-2
Trivia[]
- The first half of this chapter got adapted into the first half of the episode Haya-Moths/Ooga Booga Boo.
- The second portion of the chapter is incorrectly titled "Mariko & Maro" in the Tokyo Pop English translation of the manga. This is incorrect due to the fact Sana's mom's name is Misako, not Mariko. Additionally Mariko is later revealed to be the name of Sana's half sister, which causes more confusion.
